Gluten Free Beer Brewing  Gluten Free

Gluten-free beer

Gluten-free beer is beer made from ingredients without glycoproteins (gluten) that, for people with a variety of medical conditions, cause an autoimmune response that can lead to more serious conditions. People who have gluten intolerance (including celiacs and dermatitis herpetiformis sufferers) have a reaction to the gliadin found in wheat and more often of significance for beer, hordein, the "gluten" of barley. Such people may only drink gluten-free beer to prevent symptoms such as abdominal pain or malnutrition.

"In addition to being recognized for making world-class beer, independent craft brewers are amazing community citizens," said Julia Herz, a spokesperson for the Brewers Association. “Craft brewers are an integral part of many communities’ charitable efforts. They donate to everything from fire departments, disaster relief efforts, local events, educational fundraisers and so much more.” http://www.AmericanCraftBeerWeek.org

Changed to a weeklong event in 2006, the inaugural American Craft Beer Week was recognized by the U.S. Congress with House Resolution 753 (.pdf file). The week has continued to attract interest and support from beer lovers and the media. In 2007, more than 150 brewers registered their community celebrations at www.AmericanCraftBeerWeek.org.

Also new, SAVOR: An American Craft Beer & Food Experience        (May 16-17) will be held to commemorate American Craft Beer Week in Washington D.C. The event will showcase craft beer and food pairings with participation from 48 independent craft brewers. SAVOR signifies food and beverage appreciates’ increasing interest and knowledge of beer and food pairings.

Did You Know

 1)

Drinking one glass of your brew a day can help keep your bones strong. According to a Tufts University study, beer contains high levels of silicon, a chemical that encourages the deposit of calcium and other important minerals into bones. (July 2004)

 2)

Published online in the journal BMC Public Health. Researchers found that among more than 8200 U.S. adults, those who said they enjoyed a drink every day are 54% LESS likely than non-drinkers to be obese. Similarly, those who drank a little less (a few drinks per week) had a lower risk of obesity than teetotalers did. As expected, heavy drinking and irresponsible binge drinking raised the odds for obesity.  Responsible drinking of an alcoholic beverage shows a connection between heart disease and now body weight. Conclusion; A sitting down and relaxing with drink of wine or beer, before or with your dinner each evening may take the edge off the day's woes. We always new it was good for your soul, but even better being good for your heart and waist line is just a little plus in life.

Alcohol & Chocolate Recommended For Successful Aging

 Chocolate Mint Balls

One geriatrician's prescription for aging well includes eating chocolate and drinking alcohol.

Apparently, it's all good for anyone interested in living well and feeling better as they navigate their

50s and 60s and beyond. "It turns out that one to three drinks of alcohol and it doesn't matter whether

it's wine or any other kind of alcohol, it's actually good for you," says Dr. John Morley, director of the

division of geriatric medicine at St. Louis University and co-author of "The Science of Staying Young."

"You will think better, you will function better (and) you're less likely to get heart disease," he said.

With that said, you don't want to drink if you're a recovering alcoholic and you shouldn't eat more than a

small piece or two of dark chocolate a day. But in the book he co-authored titled "The Science of Staying Young,"

Morley recommends focusing on the things in life that you enjoy. "One of the things we've learned is staying

young requires a good attitude to life," he said. The key is moderation and focusing on fun -- advice that

isn't meant to add years to your life, but help you feel better and stay active during the decades when

energy and health can start to decline.

 1) High level of tannins from grape skins and seeds are blamed

for the hangover many women suffer after just one glass of red wine,

Opting for low-tannin wines  --- whites, rose', and light red, like Beaujolais.

instead of high-tannin wine cabernets and Chianti.
